"This is a much more personalized, individualized approach to learning."Īt first, students have to adjust to this different type of learning style, Rankins said. "I tell students, 'I'm trying not just to prepare you for college, but beyond that as well," he said. Instead of giving them answers to their questions, Rankins helps his students research the answers. "It's on the students to plan out their day." Rankins explained that the students are responsible for creating their own agenda and getting their work done. "I give them their books and tell them go." "I'm responsible for the entire class going where they want to go," he said. "When I moved over to iSchool, I started to see myself more as an office manager." "I come from the traditional style of teaching," he said. Once a unity is mastered, the student moves on to the next one.ĭaniel Rankins started teaching at iSchool High Montgomery a year ago. "They need to speak about it, think about it and explain what they learn." Students work their way through texts and then prove their mastery to the teacher. "Students are required to take ownership of their education," he said. Riggs describes it as "mastery-based and student-centered learning." When students are not enrolled in Lone Star College courses, the iSchool High teachers lead them through a unique classroom environment. Some students graduate with 60 hours and associates degrees, others transfer with 30 to 42 hours, at least a complete freshmen year worth of credits. "You have the opportunity to fast-forward, accelerate and fast-track your college experience," Riggs said. They can eventually elect to take between three to 12 college hours per semester. They start with a light course load and are able to add more college hours to the schedule once they demonstrate their capability. "This program allows freshmen to start taking college classes. Riggs said iSchool High blends high school and college into one educational experience. The nonprofit organization based in Dallas operates more than 50 public school campuses located throughout Texas, including Premier High Schools, Vista Academies, Quest Middle School, iSchool High, Founders Classical Academy and Texas Virtual Academy. Riggs explained that iSchool High is part of Responsive Education Solutions, the largest public charter school holder in the state. "It's like dual credit on steroids," he said.
